HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 8 (ACN) Cuban U18 baseball team lost on Monday 0-9 to Nicaragua, in Group A of the Pan American Championship held in the Mexican city of La Paz, and thus was left out of chances of advancing to the Super Round, so it did not get a ticket to the 2023 World Cup.
This was the second failure of the team coached by Severo Crespo -they lost 1-2 against Mexico in their debut- and then defeated Panama 6-2, results that placed them in the bottom of the group.
Cuban starter Dario Sarduy was dominant and allowed no liberties in six innings, striking out seven times. But his team barely hit six singles and the relievers did not get the job done.
At the Arturo Nahl stadium, the Nicaraguans took advantage of Sarduy's outing and took on the Cuban rescuers in the 7th inning with a scandalous nine-run run.
The Cuban team will have to discuss the placement round, a similar story to the one experienced last month by the national U23 team during the World Cup in Taipei, China.
