Cuba denounces the effects of US blockade on athletes with disabilities

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 1 (ACN) Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla denounced today that athletes with disabilities on the island are at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the world, due to the restrictions of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade.

On Twitter, the foreign minister pointed out that Washington's unilateral policy prevents access to sports equipment and materials with U.S. components, and hinders participation in events held in that northern country.

The diplomat included in his message a video with the views of Omara Durand, a sprinter in the category of visually impaired, who said that the blockade affects the professional development of all Cuban athletes.

Durand emphasized that Cuba has to buy the working materials necessary for sports improvement from third countries, which makes them more expensive, and on many occasions it is not possible to obtain them.

She also stressed that Cuba is deprived of developing more adapted Paralympic sports due to the impossibility of accessing equipment such as specialized wheelchairs for team sports.

The athlete, who has won a total of eight medals at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, commented that difficulties are also common in the visa process for competitions in the United States.
