HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 31 (ACN) Cuban Omar Almeida could become today the champion of the open chess tournament in Maia, Portugal, even before the last round of this event, which gathers more than 250 players.
Almeida gleaned 6.5 of 7 possible points after beating the Spanish Julio Suárez and Alexander Domene and is now the sole leader of the tournament.
Today he will be opposite the Norwegian Johan-Sebastian Christiansen, one of the 10 players with 5.5 points in a group that also features Cuba’s current national champion Yasser Quesada.
