HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 1 (ACN) The Cuban women's national team has options to participate in an U21 handball tournament, scheduled to take place April 4 to 9 in the Mexican capital.
Franklin Guevara, president of the Cuban Handball Federation (FCB), told the Cuban News Agency that at the moment only Mexico(as host), Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico are officially registered, but the International Federation decided to finance the costs of Cuba, Canada and the United States.
On the pretensions of the Cuban team, he said they always aspire to a good result, although the players will go to this competition without much training because most of the athletes are in their provinces.
He also pointed out that none of the Cuban players contracted in foreign leagues will be present, because this is a junior event of the U21 category.
The federative said that as the tournament is sponsored by the International Handball Federation, athletes over 21 years of age are not allowed to attend, which did happen in the Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia, held in late 2021.
Guevara explained that the competition hosted in Mexico is a qualifier to a continental tournament, for example for the North American and Caribbean region there are two places available and the same amount will be granted to Central America.
Those who guarantee those four tickets will compete in the American continent's competition in search of a place in the World Championship of that category, scheduled to be held in 2023, the president of the Cuban handball federation concluded.
