HOLGUIN, Cuba, Jan 4 (ACN) The baseball team of Holguin province(eastern Cuba) for the next National Championship was formed today at a meeting held at the Pernik Hotel in this city, with the presence of Ernesto Santiesteban, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in this territory.
The team's roster is made up of 40 players, with an average age of 27.3 years old, and it is the first team to be formed in the country within the integration calendar for the 61st edition of the National Baseball Championship, to begin January 23.
Hector Hernandez, director of the team, emphasized that in spite of the limitations due to the COVID-19, the scheduled practice sessions in the field and the confrontation in training games with several provinces were developed.
This allowed to specify technical and tactical details to be implemented in order to achieve the first qualification to the final stage of the tournament, he said.
For his part, Ernesto Santiesteban insisted that discipline on the playing field must be the main distinctive feature for the Holguín team, known in the country's baseball scene as Los Cachorro de Holguin, to achieve its objectives of qualifying as a first step towards the end of the competition.
The team includes seven rookies, three catchers, six outfielders, nine infielders and 14 pitchers, among whom are players with outstanding performance in previous seasons, such as Frankin Aballe, Edilse Silva, Yordan Manduley, Jorge Luis Peña, Yeison Pacho and Maikel Casere.
