Cuba remains sixth at First Junior Pan Am Games, Cali 2021

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 30 (ACN) Cuba remains in sixth place in the medal table of the First Junior Pan American Games of Cali 2021, after winning on Monday a silver and a bronze medal, in weightlifting and boxing, respectively.

According to the website of the multisport event that will conclude on December 5, the silver medal was won by weightlifter Marifelix Sarria, in the over 87 kilograms division, while boxer Adrian Fresneda (+91 kg) won bronze after losing by RSC in the semifinal to the local Marlon Andres Hurtado, who was losing 1-4 in the last round of the bout.

The verdict was protested by Fresneda and his coaches in the corner, since the Cuban was in conditions to continue fighting, but it did not prosper.

Thus, Cuba closed the day in sixth place, with six gold medals, seven silver and six bronze, in a tournament that is once again led by Brazil (28-20-28), followed by the United States (28-15-22), Mexico (27-41-18), Colombia (25-17-29) and Argentina (11-8-18), in that order.

Other outstanding performances of the day were those of boxers Jorge Daniel Forcades (69 kg), Khriszthihan Barrera (75 kg), Luis Frank Reynoso (81 kg) and Ronny Alvarez (91 kg), who won on Monday in the semifinals, results that assured them the silver medal and will be in contention for the gold one.

The baseball team also won against Venezuela, with a 3-0 score and advanced to the semifinals as group A leaders.

So far, the Cuban team has won medals in judo (2-2-3), diving (2-2-1), canoeing (2-1-0), weightlifting (0-2-1) and boxing (0-0-1), the latter with five silver medals already achieved.

Actions will continue Tuesday and Cuba will have a good representation in the debutant athletics, one of the sports with possibilities of medals.
