HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 29 (ACN) The Cuban men's basketball team will play today against Puerto Rico as part of the qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup held in Chihuahua, Mexico.
The Cubans will strive to get their first win in Group D after their very good performance Sunday, even if they lost 90-95 to Team U.S.A.
In that game, Cuba dominated the first quarter 37-27, but the Americans reacted to win the second 33-16. Then, after the break, the Cubans played better again and notched the third period 24-13, but lost the fourth and final quarter13-22, ending up very close to a victory over the world’s top basketball power that would made headlines everywhere.
The Cuban Jasiel Rivero, who plays for the Valencia Basket club of the Spanish League, scored an outstanding 34 points and got nine rebounds, followed by teammates Karel Guzmán (18) and Yoanki Mensía (12), whereas Isaiah Thomas (21) and B.J. Johnson and Brian Bowen led Team U.S.A with 16 points each.
