Cuba with five representatives in World Athletics U20 Championships in Kenya

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 17 (ACN) Cuba will have five representatives at the 18th World Athletics U20 Championships, to be held between 18-22 August in Nairobi, Kenya.

The javelin thrower Yiselena Ballar and 800-meter runner Daily Cooper, among the women, will compete for the island.

The men will be sprinter Shainer Reginfo, in the 100 m/p, Juan Carley Vazquez, in the shot put, and Ronald Anthony Mensia (hammer throw).

Yipsi Moreno, national commissioner of that sport, told the Cuban News Agency that in that group excels the absence of the triple jumper Leyanis Perez, who had qualified for the recently concluded Olympic Games in Tokyo, but could not participate because of an injury.

On the aspirations in the world youth competition, Moreno, who is also member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, pointed out that the first thing would be to achieve their best lifetime marks in the competition and that they could at least be among the finalists.

The five Cuban athletes were part of the Olympic pre-selection that trained in Havana and they are the ones in the best current sporting shape, she added.

Three years ago in Tampere, Finland, the Caribbean nation ranked 11th in the medal table by countries.
