Cuba kicks off in IBSA Judo Grand Prix Baku 2021



HAVANA, Cuba, May 25 (ACN) Cuba will begin its action today with Jose Manuel Romero, in the first day of the IBSA Judo Grand Prix Baku 2021, to be held until Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan, the penultimate qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Romero will make his debut against Mongolian Munkhbat Aajin in the first round of preliminaries of the 66 kg, a division in which 24 parajudokas, among them most of the best ranked, have registered.

The situation of Cuban judoka is complicated for Tokyo and the advance to the next round, as he is currently ranked 47th in the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) list, while Aajin is in the sixth place.


This Wednesday, Gerardo Rodriguez (81 kg), Isao Cruz (100 kg) and Yordani Fernandez (+100 kg) will compete on the tatamis of the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex.

Rodriguez, ranked 13th, will face Russia's Ruslan Sabirov (22) in search of the victory that will guarantee him a place in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Cruz (10), two-time Paralympic champion, will face Uzbekistan's Sharif Khalilov (9) for a place in the round of 16, while Fernandez (13), Paralympic bronze medalist at Rio de Janeiro 2016, will start directly in the quarterfinals against Turkey's Dursun. Hayran, out of the top 25 in the draw.

The competition awards direct places by ranking that in each of the divisions by this way, two to three parajudocas classified B1 (blind) and five or six B2 and B3 (visually impaired).
