Cuban canoeist wins World Cup in Hungary



HAVANA, Cuba, May 17 (ACN) Canoeist Fernando Dayán Jorge was the most outstanding for Cuba in the recently concluded canoeing World Cup, which concluded with six medals, divided into one gold, two silver and three bronze, held in Szeged, Hungary.

Jorge closed his performance this Sunday with a gold medal in the single-seater canoe (C-1) at 5,000 meters, and a silver medal in the two-seater (C-2) at 1,000 meters, together with Seguei Torres, who have qualified in the latter category for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, postponed to next summer.

Torres also climbed the podium in the C-1 to 5,000 meters, with a bronze medal, so that both are ratified among the main exponents of canoeing in the world.

Yarisleidis Cirilo also stood out for Cuba by winning a silver medal in the 200-meter C-1 and a bronze in the 5,000-meter C-1, a non-Olympic distance, but very important in the preparation for the Olympics.

The other bronze medal for Cuba went to young José Ramón Pelier, in the 500-meter C-1, who closes the fifth group of Cuban canoeists with tickets for the Japanese multisport event, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8.

According to the website www.canoeicf.com, Cuba finished in sixth place (1-2-3) by countries in the speed tournament, ahead of Germany (7-1-1), Hungary (4-8-3), Spain (3-1-0), Ukraine (2-3-5) and Russia (2-3-5).

Meanwhile, in the overall medal standings, Cuba -with no kayakers present and only in sprint- finished ninth (1-2-3), behind Germany (8-2-2), Hungary (5-9-4), Ukraine (5-4-6), Spain (4-1-1), Russia (3-1-0), Brazil (2-2-2), Great Britain (2-1-3) and Chile (2-0-1).

In the Hungarian city there was also action in the paracanoe, athletes with disabilities, and the winner was Ukraine (3-1-1), followed by Brazil (2-1-1) and Great Britain (1-1-2).

Around 700 canoeists and kayakers from 60 nations competed on the Szeged water course.
