HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 23 (ACN) Cubans Alfredo Despaigne and Dayan Viciedo both homered today, but their respective teams had different fate in the Japanese Professional Baseball League (NPB).
Despaigne hit his fourth home run of the year in three at-bats and drove in two runs, to raise his batting average (BA) to .255 and now amounts 10 RBIs; but his team, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks lost 5-10 at home to the Orix Buffaloes.
His compatriot and teammate, Yurisbel Gracial, went 1 for 5 with a single and two strikeouts to drop his BA to .264.
Meanwhile, Viciedo, one of the players who plays in the NPB without a contract sponsored by the Cuban national commission, hit his fourteenth homer of the season and a double in five at-bats, adding four RBIs, in the 11-5 home win of the Chunichi Dragons over the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.
The first baseman and clean-up hitter, who also scored twice, raised his BA to .270 and his total of RBIs to 61, figure that places him as absolute leader in that stat among Latino players.
Also in this game, Cuban closer Raidel Martinez managed to pitch a scoreless frame, with three strikeouts, to improve his ERA to 1.16.
Finally, Cuban RF Leonys Martin batted 1 for 4 and drove in two runs, in the 3-5 loss of his side, the Chiba Lotte Marines, to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, thus raising his BA to .247 and now amounts 59 RBIs.
