HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 6 (acn) Cuban players in the Argentine Volleyball League maintained their good performances in the beginning of the play offs, in which they have presence in four out of the eight teams involved in this stage.
Opposite Jesus Herrera and outside hitter Osniel Mergarejo led the attack of the leaders in the regular season, Bolívar Volley, when scoring 26 and 24 points, respectively, in the 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 25-17 and 25-16) win over Monteros.
Cuba´s outside hitter Yohan Leon entered as sub and managed to score five units for the winning side.
Herrera and Melgarejo were both included in the All-Star team of the regular phase, in which wing spiker Miguel Angel Lopez, star of the UPCN San Juan, and middle blocker Livan Osoria (Ciudad Volley), both Cubans, also earned a spot.
Lopez totaled 15 points and was the second best scorer of the game in which UPCN beat 3-0 (25-21, 25-20 and 25-18) River Plate.
In the other match of the day, Gigantes del Sur defeated Obras de San Juan 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 28-26).
The latter squad includes in its roster the youngest group of Cubans in Argentina, they are outside hitter Julio Cesar Cardenas, who scored 11 points in that game, middle blocker Javier Concepción (8) and opposite Jose Carlos Romero (4).
Today´s program includes the match Ateneo versus Ciudad Volley, runner-up of the regular phase of the league in whose ranks appear Osoria, who is involved in his best season in the South American country to the point of becoming best attacker and third best blocker in the aforementioned stage, enough to be part of the All-Star team.
