
HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 27 (acn) Cuban GM Carlos Albornoz won at the start of the Accentus Young Masters 2020, contest between a local squad and Team World in the Swiss town of Bad Ragaz.
Albornoz (2566 Elo points) beat IM Fabien Banziger (2412) in 22 moves of a Reti opening and contributed one of the two victories of the Team World that won 3-2 this first round.
German GM Alexander Donchenko (2647) achieved the other success of the winning side by defeating IM Gabriel Gahwiler (2394) in 27 moves of a Sicilian defense, in a day in which Russian GM Nikita Petrov (2592) lost to local GM Noel Studer (2546) in 40 moves of a King´s Indian defense.
The games between Italian GM Sabino Brunello (2536) – FM Aurelio Colmenares (2300) and Austrian GM Andreas Diermair (2476) – FM Theo Stijve (2232) both ended up in draw.
The Accentus Young Masters 2020 is 10-round Scheveningen system tournament.
Albornoz will face Colmenares today, while the other matches are Petrov vs. Banzinger, Donchenko - Studer, Diermair - Gahwiler and Brunello - Stijve.
