Cuba achieve first win in 2021 FIBA AmeriCup qualifiers

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 25 (acn) Cuba achieved its first victory in the 2021 FIBA AmeriCup qualifiers when beating away the US Virgin Islands.

At the UVI Sports and Fitness Center, the Cuban team won 91-64 with highlight to Center Yoel Cubilla, who scored 21 points, PF Yoanki Mensia (20) and PF Jasiel Rivero (18), but all five Cuban starters finished in double figures, while local PG Walter Hodge (23) was the match scoring leader.
The win gives Cuba the first tiebreaker - higher game point differential - over the Virgin Islands during this home and home series as last Friday, at Havana´s Sports City Coliseum, the US Virgin Islands defeated 80-64 Cuba, in the debut of both squads in this tournament.
Both teams are included in Group C along with the strong sides of Canada and the Dominican Republic and right now all the squads have same balance of one win and one loss.
The top three teams in each qualifying group will advance to the AmeriCup finals that will take place August 2021.
