Cuban surgeons successfully perform complex pediatric reconstructive procedure

HOLGUIN, Cuba, Sep 2 (ACN) A complex reconstructive surgery was recently performed at the Octavio de la Concepcion y la Pedraja Children's Hospital in Holguin as part of research to improve the quality of life of children with severe burns.

In this case, the 10-year-old patient had severe neck retraction, known as cheilodactyly, resulting from a burn that hindered movement.

Jorge Marquez Camayd, head of the Plastic Surgery and Caumatology Department at that institution, told the Cuban News Agency that the procedure combined techniques such as Z-plasty and included skin autograft to restore the function of this part of the body.

The director indicated that a functional improvement of more than six centimeters was achieved, which positively influences the patient's social reintegration.

Marquez Camayd also urged families to prevent accidents, including those involving bicycle riding or carrying hot water, which can cause serious injuries with long-term consequences.

The Octavio de la Concepcion y de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital is developing a broad research program aimed at improving the quality of care in the specialties of plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and neonatology through the application of science and technological innovation.

These include the introduction of innovative surgical techniques, the use of natural and traditional medicine, and the improvement of nursing care for critically ill patients.
