National Center for Scientific Research, birthplace of Cuban science

HAVANA, Cuba, July 1 (ACN) More than 30,000 professionals completed their training at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNIC by its Spanish acronym), opened 60 years ago by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

That number of experts included researchers, master's degree holders, doctors, diploma holders, and others, according to its directors in a summary since its opening on July 1, 1965.

Considered the first center for multidisciplinary research, it is also a precursor to the medical pharmaceutical industry, first known as the Western Scientific Pole of Havana, according to the same source in its compendium, which includes a summary of its history and, above all, the significance attributed to it by the supreme leader of the Cuban Revolution.
Later, it was integrated into the Cuban Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Group (BioCubaFarma), whose clinical trials of several products for the treatment of the new coronavirus showed encouraging results.

The National Center for Agricultural Health (CENSA in the province of Mayabeque), the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), the Center for Immunoassay (CIE), and the Center for Neurosciences (CNEURO) emerged from its facilities in the capital.

Although it was founded six decades ago, today it maintains its multidisciplinary nature, with its closed-loop activity; that is, from scientific research to the commercialization of its products in the country and abroad, and it even preserves its creative vocation.

A significant number of products, obtained from natural sources, are part of its arsenal: PPG (Ateromixol), Vasoactol, and Prevenox, from sugarcane wax; Abexol, made from beeswax; and ozonized products, including Topical and Oral Oleozón, and Dermatological Soap.

Other highly relevant nutritional supplements include soft capsules of Sacha Inchi Oil and Palmex, derived from palm kernel oil, as well as ozonized water and ozone therapy equipment.
