German Donation Benefits Pediatric Cancer Patients in Cuba

Havana, Jan 7 (ACN) A Germany-based humanitarian project called “Caricias” (Caresses) led by Cuban national Jorge Garcia, resident in that European nation, made an important donation to help treat pediatric patients of cancer at a hospital in the city of Santa Clara, central Villa Clara province.

The humanitarian donation included different medical supplies and technology like binocular microscopes, blood cell counters and others which will help the work at the hospital’s Oncology-hematology ward.

This is not the first donation made by the “Caricias” project to the Cuban hospital, which has previously received cooling equipment, cookers, computers and other resources.

“Caricias” is a marvelous initiative, an idea that has progressively expanded making important contributions to the treatment of children, said oncologist Anaisa Amores.

Project leader Garcia said that providing kitchen furniture, cooling equipment or fridges seem to be an impossible thing to do in the beginning, but after seeing it all done now, he expects to make other donations.

The “Caricias” project has been linked to Santa Clara’s Jose Luis Miranda pediatric hospital since 2018. It is an initiative that helps improve the quality of life of the pediatric patients and at the same time counter the impact on the country’s healthcare system by the US blockade.

An average 400 children and adolescents suffer from cancer every year in Cuba, a disease considered by the island’s health ministry as the first cause of death in the ages between 1 and 4 years of age and the second cause of death for kids between 5 and 19 years.lc
