CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, Jan 5 (ACN) The scientific community of the province of Ciego de Avila ratified today the willingness to increase its work in terms of sustainable development, encouraged by the declaration of the province as Outstanding in emulation for the Cuban Science Day, to be held next January 15.
Rafael Perez Carmenate, territorial delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment ( CITMA by its Spanish acronym), said in an exclusive interview with the Cuban News Agency that the recognition is endorsed by advances, during 2023, in the implementation of science, technology and innovation policies.
He highlighted the contributions of the agri-food sector, promoter of actions that favored the increase in yields of different crops, the production of pineapple vitroplants, pest and disease control, as well as the introduction of new varieties of plants.
The production of biofertilizers and organic pesticides, animal production and the seed program continued to grow, including the incorporation of transgenic corn and soybean hybrids.
Other innovations promote the use of renewable sources of energy and efficiency in the use of electricity and water; improve the means of transportation, in addition to ensuring the stability and optimal use of raw materials to produce plastic articles, high-density polyethylene pipes and attachments for hydraulic works.
In construction, the application of science has made it possible to manufacture new materials with greater efficiency in the different industrial processes, said Perez Carmenate.
The executive stated that the economic, social and environmental results and impacts of the Science, Technology and Innovation Plan defined for the final stage were greater than expected, when more than 140 projects were executed, with national and territorial scope, expressing the links between universities, scientific centers and companies.
He indicated that 19 of these initiatives contributed to priorities such as food security, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources, the conservation and efficient management of natural resources, the fight against climate change, the sustainability of the tourism industry and the application of social sciences in the current socioeconomic context.
