Cuban Medical Genetics Center with 20 Working Years

Havana, Aug 4 (ACN) Cuba’s Health Ministry acknowledged the Havana-based National Medical Genetics Center on its 20th year of work towards community-focused genetic development.

On the occasion this Saturday of the two-decade operations of the Center, first deputy Health minister Tania Cruz stressed the importance of the institution as part of the national health system by recalling that over one million studies have been carried out at the center to diagnose genetic disease and congenital conditions.

The results of those studies reveal in the low mortality rate from congenital malformations in minors below one year of age—one death in every one thousand live births—considered the lowest rate in The Americas.

Professionals with the center have led the training of clinical genetic specialists both for Cuba and countries of this region, said the doctor who also referred to the joint work with other institutions to develop what is known as personalized medicine, -- an approach focusing more on the individual and its context than on diseases.

National Medical Genetics Center director, Doctor Beatriz Marcheco, recalled the imprint of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro on the development of genetic studies in the country and the program for the diagnosis and prevention of congenital diseases.
