Havana, Dec 8 (ACN) A news release by the Cuban Health Ministry reads that following the appearance in the world of the COVID-19 omicron variant, Cuba strengthened epidemiological surveillance measure in the country, on international travelers particularly those coming from the countries who have reported cases.
On November 27, a health workers coming from Mozambique travelled to his hometown in the western Pinar del Rio province showing not symptoms related to COVID-19. On November 28, the traveler presented fever and throat pain, and he immediately went to the family doctor’s office, where he was submitted to an antigen test which resulted positive. The patient was hospitalized at the Leon Cuervo Rubio hospital.
On November 8th, the patient is submitted to a PCR test and resulted positive to SARS-Cov2. His blood sample is sent to the Havana-based Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute. After five days in hospital, the patient is submitted to a PCR test which resulted negative and he was discharged from hospital.
But on December 8,the analysis of the positive test confirmed the existence of COVID-19 Omicron variant in the patient. The epidemiological study identified 16 conctact persons, which are asymptomatic and negative to PCR tests.
