Cuba Keeps HIV/ Aids Transmission under Control



Havana, Nov 17 (ACN) Cuba keeps the HIV/Aids transmission under control at times when the world is facing the COVID-19 pandemic, said the head of the Cuban Program for Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Hepatitis, Manuel Romero.

During a press conference to welcome the upcoming World Day for HIV Response December 1st the doctor said that there are some 30 thousand HIV patients here while Aids-related mortality is progressively decreasing.

The expert said that the Cuban HIV/Aids program will set up three new labs to detect the viral load in patients; such facilities will cover all the country.

HIV patients are given specific and differentiated treatment said that doctor and went on to explain that primary health assistance has been reinforced in 30 municipalities in different provinces including Havana. This assistance includes support to persons with HIV, the promotion of health and prevention of diseases.

However, a major challenge of the Cuban program is the search for persons with HIV who have not yet been detected, something that has intensified following the control of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the fight against the pandemic, Cuba has guaranteed anti-retrovirals for all HIV patients, which will continue next year, the doctor said.

According to the UN/Aids Program, one and a half million people were infected with HIV/Aids in 2020.
