Cuban Internationalist Doctor Feels Honored to Assist his People

Matanzas, Cuba, Aug 17 (ACN) “In my life, I have met several international medical missions, but helping save lives in my own country amidst a difficult scenario marked by COVID-19 is an immense honor,” said Doctor Israel Avila.

Avila is a member of the Henry Reeve Medical Contingent, specialized in big epidemics and disasters; he was taking a one-month rest in his hometown, eastern Las tunas province, after having assisted the Mexican people against the pandemic, “and I learned that doctors were needed in Matanzas province to fight the complex COVID-19 spread and assist an increasing number of sick people, so I decided to travel here to help.”

Doctor Avila was assigned to a pediatric hospital in Matanzas city for a month. “Assisting children who tested positive to COVID-19 demands great sensitiveness and dedication; they are patients from one month of life up to 18 years of age.

The medical doctor, who graduated 11 years ago, concluded his work in Matanzas and now heads for the eastern province of Holguin to fight the coronavirus. He said he leaves Matanzas recalling the nice gestures of affection he received during the month he worked in this western territory.
