CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, Mar 10 (ACN) A little more than a month after its opening, the Molecular Biology Laboratory in this province has processed over 12,000 PCR samples—a monthly average of 500—to detect COVID-19 cases, according to Yenisbel Valdivia Portal, director of the center and specialist in Microbiology.
Quality control procedures conducted by specialists from the "Pedro Kourí" Tropical Medicine Institute in Havana attest to the assay’s compliance, so she asked people to trust in the laboratory reports.
“Managing this center and devoting time to my family at the same time is quite a challenge (…) but I am into it on a full time basis so that I can do my bit to help decrease the number of cases at community level. It is also an opportunity to learn more, since we are developing the state of the art in SARS CoV-2 detection.”
Every member of the staff, such as Francis Castillo Cis, a general assistant and baker who serves meals, makes laundry deliveries and cleans the rooms after working hours, to mention only one, holds that working here means a lot to him despite his chronic asthma epidemic.
The perseverance and capacity to face the current challenges speaks of the human quality of this mostly female workforce and their contribution to the optimal performance of the laboratory, which allows the province more autonomy, avoids the costs of taking samples to other provinces and gives the local population constant reassurance of its reliable results.
