There have been no re-infected cases of COVID-19 in Cuba, expert asserts

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 3 (ACN) So far and in almost a year of outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, there have been no cases of reinfection with COVID-19 in Cuba, said today in Havana Dr. Francisco Duran Garcia, national director of epidemiology of the ministry of public health (MINSAP by its Spanish acronym).

While clarifying questions at the usual press conference, which is broadcast daily by Cuban television, the expert stressed that it may be that after clinical discharge a patient may have a certain symptomatology after a week or more days, a test is carried out and he/she remains positive.

These are the fluctuations of the viral load; it cannot really be said that the patient has been reinfected because it is within the period of time in which the virus can still be present in the results, Dr. Duran clarified.

On the other hand, he pointed out that a PCR can give a false positive because at a certain moment, especially due to the way in which the sample is taken and transferred, it can sometimes become contaminated.

In any case, a positive case of COVID-19 always leads to an epidemiological analysis, if it is a person who has not had an important source of transmission, if there is no one else infected in the group where it is developed, the test is often repeated to rule out or confirm the disease.

Sometimes there have also been some contaminations at laboratory level that have made a group of samples to be repeated, but they are always performed again to verify them, the Minsap official clarified.

In another question, the expert reiterated that the antigen test is between 90 and 93 percent effective and when a person tests positive, a PCR, a confirmatory test, is performed afterwards.

He pointed out that it is effective and in Cuba it is applied to all suspicious persons, that is to say, those who have clinical signs of the disease suggestive of COVID-19 and it is also applied to all respiratory cases.
