Cuba shows important progress in vaccines development against COVID-19

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 2 (ACN) Cuba begins a promising week for its vaccine candidates against COVID-19 with the beginning of Soberana 02's clinical trials Monday and the presentation of the documentation of another possible drug developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).

Experts from the Finlay Institute, the Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute, Combiomed and the Medical-Surgical Research Center are leading the clinical trials phase of Soberana 02, the only project based on combined vaccine platforms.
The second Cuban candidate against COVID-19 has among its characteristics the use of aluminum hydroxide adjuvant and tetanus toxoid as transporting protein, technologies in which Finlay Institute has a large experience.
CIGB delivered the documentation to register its first vaccination candidate against the novel coronavirus this weekend.
Eduardo Martinez Diaz, president of the group BioCubaFarma, said on Twitter the country will have four vaccination candidates against COVID-19 before this year ends and in 2021 the entire population will be immunized against this disease.
