HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 21 (ACN) Cuba's Henry Reeve International Medical Contingent was honored with the 2020 Democracy Award to the outstanding Latin American personality, awarded by Argentina´s Caras y Caretas Cultural Center.
The respected international contingent of Cuban healthcare professionals, specialized in disaster situations and serious epidemics, this year has brought its noble and supportive work to the hardest hit areas by the Covid-19 pandemic.
At present, 43 medical brigades are active in 33 countries and 2,523 healthcare professionals treat Covid-19 patients that caught the novel coronavirus, which currently accumulates over 40 million infections since its first outbreak.
The contingent shared the award, which recognizes those who show their daily commitment through their life and work with democratic values, with the Lastesis de Chile collective.
According to the organizers, other personalities were also distinguished in this 12th edition, such as the outstanding fighter Hebe de Bonafini, president of the Plaza de Mayo's Mothers, an honorary human rights award.
