HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 13 (ACN) The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued a warning against the oral use of chlorine products as a treatment for COVID-19, Infomed, Cuba's health network, published on Wednesday.
PAHO recommends that the population avoid consuming products containing chlorine dioxide or related substances and that all marketing of such products for therapeutic purposes be reported to the authorities.
Since the beginning of the pandemic in March this year there have been a number of products on the market that contain chlorine dioxide or its derivatives, alone or in combination, which falsely claim to have curative properties for COVID-19 and even other associated disorders, PAHO noted.
Chlorine dioxide, a gas used as bleaching agent in water treatment plants and paper mills, and sodium hypochlorite, a disinfectant marketed as household bleach or washer, may be toxic if ingested and can cause a range of adverse effects.
The health organization advises that health authorities provide notification of adverse events related to these substances and issue "the necessary alerts and regulatory actions, including possible sanctions, to prevent the recurrence of similar events," Infomed concludes.
