HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 26 (ACN) Cuban public health minister Jose Angel Portal highlighted his country's achievements in the application of cochlear implants, as part of the celebration of World Cochlear Implant Day.
Portal wrote on Twitter: Cuban cochlear implant program, implemented by our nation since 2005, is one of the achievements of the National Health System and a sign of Cuba's constant concern for its children, especially those with disabilities.
February 25 is the international day of this implant, a technique which allows a severely deaf person to hear through electrical stimulation of the acoustic cells inside the inner ear.
It was precisely on this date but in 1957 that the first implant of this kind was completed by doctors Andre Djourno and Charles Eyries, who made history by making a totally deaf person hear.
World Cochlear Implant Day began to be celebrated in 2009 and since then, associations and society in general have begun to echo this technical advance in hearing and is now celebrated in over 60 countries with all kinds of activities and events.
