HOLGUÍN, Cuba, January 8 (ACN) A project promoted by UNICEF is fostering environmental protection in the province of Holguín through the inclusion of environmental education into academic programs.
Lázaro Orlando Zaldaña Pérez, a methodologist with the General Division of Education, said that the initiative is part of Tarea Vida (Task Life), the Cuban government's plan to tackle climate change.
Among the themes of the project, entitled “Education, children’s role, inclusion and gender to reduce disaster multi-risk and improve resilience to climate change from schools to communities in Cuba,” are the dangers of forest fires and tropical cyclones, especially in schools near rivers, wooded areas, and other locations.
The program, concluded in 2025, featured three stages: training, outreach and implementation, as well as a final workshop for Civil Defense specialist, included environment-related subjects such as The World We Live In, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Geography, based on spelling boards, models, vocational study groups, special morning briefings, and hands-on activities.
The initiative, which also benefited the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo, will be extended this year to schools in Central and Western Cuba.
