Havana University Marks 298 Birthday

Havana, Jan 5 (ACN) The University of Havana, the oldest of its kind in Cuba, marked its 298th birthday during a ceremony at its founding site, currently occupied by the San Geronimo University College in the old section of the city.

The ceremony was presided over by Higher Education Minister Walter Baluja and by University Rector Miriam Nicado. Attending were government officials, university staff and student leaders.

Rector Nicado spoke to the audience focusing on the universities operating as the main centers of basic and applied research; she said that without that we could not talk about knowledge economy.

She expressed her university determination to cooperate to solve everyday problems and boost the country’s social and economic development.

Professor Emeritus Orlando Torres addressed the role of the university in the massive training of Cuban and foreign professionals, and he also recalled the center’s cooperation with the development of homegrown COVID-19 vaccines.

The ceremony voiced rejection to US actions against Venezuela and paid tribute to the Cubans killed in action in the South American nation. LC
