HAVANA, Cuba, November 11 (ACN) The Russian Society of Friendship with Cuba commemorated this Tuesday the 61st anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's election as president of the then Soviet-Cuban Friendship Society, an event that took place during the official visit to Moscow of a Cuban delegation headed by Commander Ernesto "Che" Guevara, as reported by the Cubaminrex website.
The institution emphasized that this event marked a milestone in the consolidation of cooperation and solidarity between the two countries.
Since its founding, the Society's central mission has been to strengthen cultural, scientific, and humanitarian ties between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cuba, and it currently has 47 branches and more than 400 active members throughout Russia.
On this anniversary, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to promoting joint projects in the scientific and cultural fields, fostering academic exchange, and supporting solidarity initiatives that reinforce the friendship between the two people.
As part of bilateral cooperation, direct flights between Moscow and Holguín resumed on November 8th with the arrival of a Nordwind aircraft at Frank País International Airport, the main gateway to the northeastern Cuban province.
The open flight was greeted with the traditional water salute and marks the reactivation of a route interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airline, which has operated the route since 2017, will use large-capacity aircraft to cover the more than 9,000 kilometers separating the two cities.
Cuban authorities indicated that the reopening of the air route is a significant step for tourism in Holguín and for strengthening ties between Cuba and Russia, within a context of growing bilateral cooperation.
