Diaz-Canel presides over ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of Operation Carlota

LIMONAR, MATANZAS, Cuba, November 6 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, presided today over the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the start of Operation Carlota, the historic internationalist mission to aid Angola.

Floral offerings on behalf of Army General Raul Castro Ruz, Diaz-Canel, and the Cuban people were placed at the Monument to the Rebel Slave in the Triunvirato Museum area to honor the memory of the heroes and martyrs who participated in the Operation.

Also, on the grounds of the former Triunvirato sugar mill, the 182nd anniversary of the historic uprising led in the area by Carlota, a Lucumi slave whose name identifies the operation that became an epic of solidarity, uniting Cubans and Africans since 1975, was commemorated.

Also among the participants in the ceremony were Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Party; Army Corps General Joaquin Quintas Sola, Vice Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR); other political and governmental representatives of the people; the ambassadors of Namibia and South Africa; the chargé d'affaires of Angola in Cuba; a group of reserve generals who actively participated in the internationalist mission; and relatives of fallen combatants.

The operation, which began on November 5, 1975, became a landmark internationalist military feat in the contemporary history of Cuba, achieving the definitive independence of Angola, the liberation of Namibia, and the elimination of the apartheid regime in South Africa.
