UN activates Action Plan in response to Melissa's impacts

HAVANA, Cuba, November 6 (ACN) The United Nations System in Cuba presented its Action Plan in response to the severe impacts of Hurricane Melissa in the eastern region of the country, according to its official Facebook page.

The post states that the objective is to mobilize resources to support more than 1 million people in five provinces recently affected by the hurricane.

During the presentation, which was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba, the main lines of intervention of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) were outlined, focusing on early recovery and community resilience.

According to the text, the plan includes immediate actions to restore basic living conditions for affected families through shelter solutions and the safe repair of damaged homes, prioritizing the most vulnerable households.

It also proposes restoring the hydro-meteorological monitoring and early warning system, with an emphasis on the risk of flooding, and contributing to the humanitarian restoration of access to energy and essential services through sustainable solutions.

Another key element is the reactivation of local production of construction materials, in order to guarantee the provision of shelters and the restoration of vital services and housing in the affected communities.

As part of the initial actions, UNDP has deployed resources such as tarpaulins, metal sheets, chainsaws, electric generators, single-person mattresses, and tool kits for reconstruction in the provinces of Granma and Guantánamo.

The Plan is supported by the United Nations Central Emergency Fund and coordinated by the Office for Humanitarian Affairs, within the framework of the United Nations System's comprehensive response in Cuba.
