Díaz-Canel: “I urge our people not to be overconfident”

HAVANA, Cuba, October 29 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel urged the population to not to be overconfident and to maintain discipline and protect themselves as Hurricane Melissa, a category 3 storm, churns across the eastern part of the country.

In his message, the President remarked that it has been a complex early morning marked by extensive damage caused by the hurricane, which made landfall in Santiago de Cuba province’s municipality of Guamá with sustained winds of at least 195 kilometers per hour.

Díaz-Canel remarked that the country is ready to begin recovery efforts as soon as the weather conditions make it possible.

The Cuban Institute of Meteorology reported in its latest Tropical Cyclone Advisory that Hurricane Melissa is expected to continue weakening slightly over the next 12 to 24 hours as it moves on a course close to northeast at a steady speed.

Hurricane-force winds and heavy rains will continue to pummel the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Holguín in the morning.
