Cuba's cold season campaign plans to plant 517,000 hectares

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 9 (ACN) The 2025-2026 cold season, which began in early September in most Cuban agricultural companies, aims to plant a total of 517,000 hectares of various crops, which is key to guaranteeing the country's food supply, the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) reported on its website.

Yohan Garcia, MINAG's Director General of Agriculture, stated that farmers' efforts will be combined with science and experience in the application of technologies and the use of scarce available resources.

One of the priorities for this phase will be the planting of potatoes, as well as rustic crops such as sweet potatoes, cassava, plantains, and taro.

This agricultural period will extend until late February 2026 and will also focus on the planting of root vegetables, greens, grains, and fruit trees. Biological means will be used to control pests and diseases, organic fertilizers for soil fertilization, and animal traction for land preparation and crop cultivation.

According to agricultural sector authorities, the campaign must combine efficient management to increase yields, despite the challenges and input limitations.

The Agricultural, Forestry, and Tobacco Workers' Union will organize to support with volunteer work during times of greatest stress, such as during harvests; popular mobilization with the participation of state workers, cooperatives, farmers, and youth will be decisive.
