Cuban leaders hail International Youth Day

HAVANA, Cuba, August 12 (ACN) In a post on X to salute International Youth Day, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel remarked that the date holds plenty of motivation to celebrate the occasion in Cuba, stressing that that young people have been the great protagonists of Cuban history and reasserted his confidence in them.

“We come from youth and dedicate our best energies to young people’s rights and dreams”, he wrote.

In a separate post, Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State, congratulated Cuban youth, whom he referred to as key figures of and vanguards in every task of the Homeland, and quoted Commander in Chief Fidel Castro’s words when he said, "This is the Revolution of our people; the Revolution of our youth."

Cuba’s province of Holguín hosts the main events to commemorate both the date and the 99th anniversary of the birth of the leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.

In December 1999, the UN General Assembly proclaimed August 12 as International Youth Day, at the suggestion of the World Conference of Ministers of Youth held in Lisbon in May 1998.

The theme this year, "Local Youth Actions for the Sustainable Development Goals and Beyond," highlights the unique role of youth in translating global ambitions into community-driven realities.
