Diaz-Canel mourns traffic accidents on weekend in the country

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 7 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the country, expressed today his regret for the traffic accidents that occurred in the western and central provinces of Matanzas and Ciego de Avila on weekend, respectively.
Cuban head of state offered his condolences to the families and assured them that they are continuing to provide care for the injured.

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 5, an accident occurred at the Varadero toll booth, leaving two dead and material damage to the road infrastructure.

According to Sandra Loureiro, director of the National Road Safety Center, a private vehicle traveling at high speed from Varadero to Matanzas violently impacted the protective barrier of the toll booths.

Due to the impact, the car was split in two: one half rolled toward the toll booth and caught fire, while the other was destroyed at the scene.

On the other hand, three minors, one adult, and several others were reported dead on Sunday, July 6, on the highway in the Rio Grande community, Majagua municipality, Ciego de Avila, as a result of a massive accident.

According to witnesses, it is believed that the truck driver, which was transporting people and belonged to the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, lost control of the vehicle.

Major Alexander Sanchez Gonzalez, head of Traffic in the province, informed the press that the cause of the accident is being investigated.
