Cubans living abroad advocate for environmental cooperation

HAVANA, Cuba, July 4 (ACN) Cubans living abroad advocated for strengthening cooperation on environmental preservation projects at the 1rst scientific meeting held in the context of the 15th International Convention on Environment and Development.

In the presence of Armando Rodriguez, Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment, Cubans living in Turkey, Germany, and Angola led the idea of creating partnerships and programs to address the proper management of coastal marine ecosystems and the search for funding and technological resources to restore watersheds and the national electricity system, and advance food and nutrition security.

Angel Riego, a professor at the Autonomous University of Mexico, addressed the need to formalize mechanisms to unite the diaspora, which is interested in maintaining ties with its country of origin and contributing to economic and social development.

He discussed the possibility of integrating Cuban professionals into master's and doctoral programs at international institutions, and that young Mexicans could opt for study modules in Cuba and share knowledge on biodiversity, adaptation to climate change, and the use of renewable energy sources, among other topics.

Ana Teresita Gonzalez-Fraga, Director General of Consular Affairs and Assistance to Cubans Living Abroad at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that during the 4th Conference of the Nation and Migration, held in 2023 in Havana, it was agreed to carry out a systemic and permanent exchange with Cubans living abroad by social sector.

As with other events, this has been an opportunity for dialogue, and it is very moving to hear their innovative ideas and their commitment to the homeland that formed them, and their desire to help amidst a complex scenario marked by the tightening of unilateral coercive measures by the United States against Cuba, the official stated.

The 15th International Convention on Environment and Development will be held at the Havana Convention Center until July 5th, with a broad scientific program consisting of seven conferences, symposia, panels, and an exhibition fair.
