Environmental Convention addresses nuclear techniques

HAVANA, Cuba, July 3 (ACN) The 15th International Convention on Environment and Development, under way in this city, is holding a workshop on Nuclear and Isotopic Techniques for Sustainable Development based on the experience gained by and the proposed solutions presented by professionals from Cuba’s Agencia de Energía Nuclear y Tecnologías de Avanzada (AENTA) and Agencia de Medio Ambiente (AMA).

Experts from various departments engaged in works related to information management and energy development, radiation protection, and environmental engineering will discuss topics ranging from particulate matter used in solar panels―which are booming in Cuba as the country strives to reduce fossil fuel consumption―and the anticyclonic influence on the trajectory of radioactive clouds from nuclear power plants in Florida to naturally occurring radioactive elements in the Cuban construction materials industry.

Attended by representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Convention included a special panel discussion about the carbon market, the Cuban strategy and the global context, case studies on mangrove sediments in Mazatlán, Mexico, and inventories and rates of organic carbon sequestration in seagrass sediments in Cuba’s Gulf of Batabanó.
