HAVANA, Cuba, July 1 (ACN) In recognition of the meritorious work of historians in that eastern territory, the easternmost province of Guantanamo will host today the main event for Cuban Historian's Day, a commemoration dedicated to honoring those who preserve that discipline on the island.
Jorge Luis Aneiros Alonso, president of the Cuban Historians Association (UNHIC by its Spanish acronym), explained in statements to the Cuban News Agency that the easternmost province maintained positive results in the performance of its members, both in 2024 and this year, where they organized activities for the 130th anniversaries of the Duaba and Playitas de Cajobabo landings.
The director of the Office of Historical Affairs of the Presidency also stated that the day of recognition for this work runs from June 17th to July 31st, in commemoration of two dates that mark the 120th anniversary of the death of Generalissimo Maximo Gomez Baez and the 5th anniversary of the death of the Historian of the City of Havana, Eusebio Leal Spengler.
He noted that in the current context, UNHIC is promoting multiple actions to promote knowledge of national history, such as holding forums and seminars on this topic throughout the country.
Cuban Historian's Day commemorates the appointment of Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring as the first Historian of the City of Havana. This event was long celebrated on July 19, but later studies placed the date on July 1, 1935, justifying the change.
In this regard, the Cuban Historians Association issues a congratulatory message
CUBAN HISTORIANS ASSOCIATION
MESSAGE TO HISTORIANS FOR THE DAY OF THE CUBAN HISTORIAN
July 1st is a day for Cuban culture as Historian's Day is celebrated. This date was chosen in honor of Dr. Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring—a distinguished historian and promoter of the National History Congresses—who on that date in 1935 was awarded the title of Historian of Havana, whose work was continued by Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler.
Amidst campaigns of disinformation and distortion of the past, and in the face of the threats the world faces today from a fascist doctrine, engendered in the most reactionary circles of the extreme right in the United States and Europe, which has tighten the blockade and campaigns and pressures to overthrow the Revolution; The science of history must contribute its wealth of knowledge to strengthen us ideologically, politically, and culturally.
For these reasons, we celebrate Historian's Day in the midst of creative, combative, and committed activity with our history and our homeland.
The main commemorative event takes place in the province of Guantanamo, whose UNHIC branch was recognized for its work in recent years in several of the association's spheres of activity.
The day of tribute, which began in Artemisa on June 17, the 120th anniversary of the death of Generalissimo Maximo Gomez Baez, a brilliant military strategist who fought in the Liberation Army during the 19th-century wars of independence, will culminate in Cienfuegos on July 31, the fifth anniversary of the passing of historian Eusebio Leal Spengler.
Our event is part of the commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the beginning of the Necessary War, organized by Jose Marti, and the 72nd anniversary of the actions of July 26, 1953.
We urge historians to continue supporting us in the new challenges that lie ahead in the research, teaching, and communication of history and in the protection of heritage, along with the internal functioning of the association.
The culmination of the provincial history assemblies and events, the selection of papers for the 26th National History Congress, to be held in Las Tunas from October 13 to 15, the presentation of provincial history awards, national recognition diplomas, and the corresponding UNHIC Scholarships, the creation and improvement of the history pages on ECURED, the progress made on the publishable versions of municipal histories, and the editorial and communication work on social media are among the tasks carried out during the event.
Cuban Historian's Day is a time to honor and recognize our members and all those who contribute to the knowledge and defense of history, continuing the generations of Cubans who forged the nation and our nationality, who fought for independence and social justice, and who bequeathed us a free, sovereign, anti-imperialist, Martí, and Fidelista homeland.
Long live Cuban Historian's Day!
Until victory always!
