Cuban authorities assess demographic behavior in country's easternmost region

GUANTANAMO, Cuba, Jun 17 (ACN) The session of the Guantanamo Provincial Council of Social Sciences evaluated the province's demographic behavior and trends, with special attention to the importance of linking these variables with the projections of the State Plan to Combat Climate Change (Tarea Vida) and the Territorial Development Strategies.

At a meeting held on Monday in the Revolution Square Mariana Grajales Coello, and before experts in the Social Sciences and Humanities who make up the Council, MSc Roidis Coello Márquez, member of the provincial commission for addressing demographic dynamics, reported on the movement of the Guantanamo population and its accelerated decline. According to recent data from the National Office of Statistics and Information, the province has a population of 465,429 inhabitants, 231,868 men and 233,561 women.

Since 2019, the province's population has decreased by more than 40,000 inhabitants, and of this number, 38,000 Guantanamo residents are of working age. This is due to a progressive increase in emigration, both external, outside the province and the country, and internal, from rural areas to urban areas.

The participants in the Provincial Council agreed that there are many social challenges posed by Guantanamo's demographic trends, which require understanding and utilizing these elements in sound government management that contributes to improving the population's quality of life.

MSc Jesus Martin Perez, territorial delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment, emphasized the importance of evaluating the results provided by the demographic observatory to link them with the priorities established in the Life Task and the integration of these scientifically validated results into the development strategies of the municipalities.
