Cuba and Paraguay sign cooperation agreement on history

HAVANA, Cuba, May 30 (ACN) The academies of History of Cuba and Paraguay signed a cooperation agreement to promote joint research and extension projects.

Representatives of both countries signed it on Thursday in Asuncion, according to press reports.

Francisco Fernandez Peña, ambassador of Cuba and representing the national institution, highlighted the importance of the agreement as it constitutes a vital space to rescue and disseminate the historical links that unite their countries.

In his speech, he recalled the role of National Hero Jose Marti, Paraguay's consul to New York in 1880, the friendship between Cuban poet Nicolas Guillen and their respective writers, and the decoration of writer Augusto Roa Bastos by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro.

The text will also promote the exchange of publications, studies and archives, as well as academic activities, including symposiums, conferences and collaborative editions.

Gustavo Acosta, president of the Paraguayan Academy of History, described the agreement as a milestone in the academic exchange between the two countries, in reciprocity to the previous signature made by his counterpart Eduardo Torres-Cuevas.
