Cuba implements measures to tackle climate change



 HOLGUIN, Cuba, May 27 (ACN) The Provincial Meteorological Center of thH eastern province of Holguin is coordinating a broad program to confront climate change, as part of the strategies aimed at reducing the negative impact of this phenomenon in the territory.

Zulema Reyes Bermudez, deputy technical director of this entity, told Cuban News Agency (ACN) that the proposal includes the evaluation of the damages caused by intense drought, large-scale atmospheric phenomena and sea level rise to ecosystems and vulnerable populations.

She pointed out that these researches contribute methods focused on agricultural and industrial promotion, taking into account the variations associated with climate, which contribute to sustainable development and the promotion of resilient communities.

In addition, the projects include hazard, vulnerability and risk analyses in mountainous and difficult to access areas focused on biodiversity protection, one of the priorities of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment due to the high endemism of the territory, the expert added.

She explained that in the last two years, ecosystem services have also been identified in the Bahía de Naranjo Protected Natural Landscape, in the areas of recreation and tourism, study and research and biodiversity, necessary for its exploitation from the economic point of view.

The program also includes training on the subject for community managers and stakeholders and environmental education plans to promote reforestation and solid waste collection, among other activities.

The Holguin Provincial Meteorological Center also monitors atmospheric pollution, weather assessments, sustainable food production and agronomy.
