Photovoltaic solar park in Cuba provides clean energy to the national system

SAN LUIS, SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, May 27 (ACN) In the urgent change of the energy matrix towards renewable energy sources, the municipality of San Luis, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba has been an example for more than seven years with the stable operation of the photovoltaic solar park Rio Grande II.

Rayler Vidal Garcia, specialist B in the exploitation of photovoltaic solar parks and brigade chief, told the Cuban News Agency that the site, located in the rural town of the same name, about four kilometers from the municipal capital, has an extension of seven hectares with 17,800 panels installed on 800 table structures, and 4 technological containers, each one with two inverters, for an installed power of 4.4 megawatts (MW).

Among the benefits of the solar park is its contribution to saving around eight tons of petroleum by means of clean energy; and the reduction of the electricity deficit of the province and the country, the young engineer emphasized.

This facility provides an average of 22 to 26 MW per month, allowing the rural communities of Tablon, Tetuan, Rio Grande and Parana, in the municipality of Palma Soriano, to enjoy this service, which is important for their social and economic development.

Likewise, it constitutes support for part of the Contramaestre circuit, and its technology also allows the accumulation of load when there are difficulties with the National Electric System (SEN) in order to create micro-islands in the southeastern territory, Vidal García pointed out.

In the midst of a complex economic and SEN situation, there is an urgent need to achieve energy efficiency in order to eliminate the effects on this vital service by increasing the generation capacity of the Caribbean nation.

Rio Grande II marks the path towards energy sustainability in San Luis and Santiago de Cuba with a focus on the sun.
