Diaz-Canel highlights African influence on Cuban nationality

HAVANA, Cuba, May 25 (ACN) In a post on X on the occasion of Africa Day, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez highlighted Africa’s influence on the constitution of the Cuban nationality.

“We celebrate Africa on its Day as the continent from which many of our ancestors came. Torn from their land and brought as slaves, they contributed so much to the formation of what is Cuban that fighting for the independence of their peoples amounted to settling our own debt with humanity,” he added, quoting the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, when he said: “(…) Those not capable of fighting for others will never be capable enough to fight for themselves".

Also in X, Esteban Lazo, president of the National Assembly of People's Power, remarked that “the strong and long-lived ties that unite us with the African peoples are indestructible. Africa's most just causes have always counted on Cuba's firm support", whereas Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez stressed that the date is proudly welcomed by the Cubans “because of the common history of struggle, blood, victories and hopes that unite Cuba and Africa”.

At a meeting held in 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 32 leaders of the continent established the Organization of African Unity, replaced by the African Union in 2002.
