Cuba Weather Service Calls for Calm after GFS Model Prediction

Havana, May 6 (ACN) Cuba’s Meteorology Institute (INSMET) called on the people to keep calm and ready following a recent GFS prediction model by the US National Hurricane Center about the possible development of a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean area between May 19th and 20th.

Although cyclones may form out of the hurricane season—June 1st to November 30th--, prediction covering more than five or six days have a higher margin for error and usually change drastically in further updates, INSMET noted.

On its Facebook account, the Institute explained that a 12 or 13-day prediction entails much uncertainty, because you can see the tropical storm once and suddenly stop seeing it later.

INSMET notes that what’s crucial enough is not to get alarmed, but keep informed through official channels in Cuba, such as the Meteorology Institute and the Civil Defense Authority.

The Institute said that weather predictions are not based on only one model; however, if necessary, this entity will issue official advisories on time. It called not to be misguided by speculations in direct reference to GFS model which raised unrest on social media by predicting the possible impact by a tropical storm on eastern Cuba this month.
