Havana, April 23 (ACN) Combined forces of forest rangers and agricultural workers are fighting dangerous forest fighters in the westernmost Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.
The head of the Rangers Corps, lieutenant colonel Alexander Pereda told the local TV channel Tele Pinar that the western province is facing a high level of danger due to poor rain favoring the occurrence of large forest fires.
A major blaze in the locality of El Arenal, Minas de Matahambre region, is now out of control and it is burning more than 1200 hectares of forest, said Forest Rangers Office member Yuri Hernandez.
Hernandez said that more than one hundred men are currently fighting the fires, while other forces are expected to join the firefighting action.
Flames are showing in forest areas in the municipality of San Juan y Martinez and the Minas de Matahambre mountains where there is enough fuel for the blaze, add to this the action of the winds which favor the fire spread, Hernandez said
