HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 22 (ACN) On the occasion of the death of Pope Francis, the President of the Republic of Cuba has decided to decree Official Mourning from 6:00 a.m. on April 22 until 12:00 midnight on April 24, 2025.
He was a progressive Supreme Pontiff and very active in the search for solutions to global problems affecting humanity and the environment and a fervent advocate of peace, with whom our country coincided on many issues of the international agenda.
During his long and outstanding career as Head of State and spiritual leader, Pope Francis made important contributions to the strengthening of relations between Cuba and the Holy See, based on respectful dialogue and moved by deep feelings of affection for the Cuban people.
He mediated for the improvement of relations between the United States and Cuba, advocating for the U.S. government to set aside the blockade policy against our nation.
He maintained a friendly relationship with Army General Raul Castro Ruz and received President Miguel Diaz-Canel at the Holy See in June 2023.
While the Official Mourning is in force, the Lone Star Flag is hoisted at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.
