Havana, April 16 (ACN) The 34th Juan Rius Rivera Puerto Rican solidarity brigade will join May Day celebrations at Havana’s Revolution Square on May 1st and will take part at the International Solidarity-with-Cuba Forum at the city capital’s Conventions Center.
On Thursday, April 17 the 35 Puerto Rican brigadistas will be welcomed at the Havana-based Friendship Institute (ICAP). Later they will pay homage to the Father of the Puerto Rican Homeland Ramon Emeterio Betances and to Cuban National Hero Jose Marti; both activities will take place at Havana’s centrally located parks.
The activists will then travel to an inlet known as Maria la Gorda, on the southern coast of western Pinar del Rio province, point of landing in 1896 of Puerto Rican independence fighter Juan Rius Rivera, the highest-ranking Puerto Rican officer, who joined the Cuban independence war against Spanish colonial rule.
They will also join Cuba’s commemoration of the Playa Giron victory—the defeat of the 1961 US-led mercenary invasion on Bay of Pigs—and the triumph of the Vietnamese people against US imperialism in 1975.
During a two-week stay here the Puerto Rican activists will meet with Cuban workers, youths, vets, farmers and doctors and they will also do voluntary work and hand in donations to healthcare centers.
