Cuba opens new solar park in central region of the country

CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, Apr 7 (ACN) The Cruce de la Trocha photovoltaic solar park (psfv by its Spanish acronym), the first in the central province of Ciego de Avila with a 21.87 megawatt (MW) capacity, was opened in the presence of the Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes Menendez, Cuban deputy prime minister, and Vicente de la O Levy, minister of energy and mines.

During the official opening ceremony of this renewable energy center, on Saturday, more than ten entities that, together with the El Vaquerito Military Construction Unit and the Territorial Electric Company, worked in the construction and assembly of the work, were recognized, as well as 25 outstanding workers were honored.

This important work, also known as Ciego Norte, was completed on schedule, starting its construction with the temporary facilities and civil objects in September 2024 and the assembly on October 26, 2024, which frames the entire investment process in a period of less than seven months.
Alfre Menendez Perez, governor of the province, said in the main remarks of the event that "this park is a symbol of sovereignty and a promise for the future, each panel installed is a victory against adversity, an act of faith in our potential and a demonstration that Cuba is moving towards a sovereign and sustainable future".

The synchronization tests of the Cruce de la Trocha psfv began on March 20, and four days later it was incorporated into the National Electric System with all its inverters in operation.

To date, this park, located near the town of Grego, in the provincial capital, has contributed 379 mega watt/hour (MW/h), which represents a saving of 98.6 tons of fuel and thus avoided the emission of 321 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

With the 15.6 MW of photovoltaic solar energy previously installed in Ciego de Avila, plus the contribution of Cruce de la Trocha and three solar photovoltaic plants of equal power and another one of five MW, currently in the investment process, the installed power of this source would
reach 108 MW, enough to cover the maximum demand during the province's midday peak hours. Cuba construye 92 psfv de 21.87 MW cada uno —divididos en programas A y B— para sumar dos mil MW de potencia solar instalada hacia 2026.
